TCFL 16 // Episode 8 Recap

This week's episode had me thinking a lot about TV "crossovers". I grew up in a time where crossovers were fun and surprising (at least to me, a pre-teen without the internet). I remember when Urkel showed up to hang out with the Fosters and Lamberts on Step By Step, and when he helped Stephanie Tanner deal with wearing glasses on Full House. Just cuz I remember them fondly doesn't mean they were all good. I could have done without Eric and Jack dating witches on Boy Meets World because ABC's T.G.I.F. had to figure out something to do with them and Sabrina The Teenage Witch for a Halloween episode.

I remember when crossovers weren't really even CROSSOVERS. Like when two ER doctors (but not those ER doctors) played by George Clooney and Noah Wyle showed up to hang out with Rachel and Monica on Friends.

Even recently, as Mini Commish is getting into (being forced into) shows that Mrs. Commish and I used to watch as kids, I'm learning that the universe building was going on way back then. Did you know that the kids on Rocket Power babysat the kids on Rugrats? I just hope Doug wasn't invited. He's a loser.

Nowadays, as a 30-something-year-old cynic, I get that it's all about the money (should I just direct deposit my paychecks to you, Marvel Universe?). Maybe the shows needed a boost to break up the monotony (how many Law & Orders and CSIs are there now?). Or maybe one of the shows didn't know what else to do in their last season (I'm looking at you, Olivia Pope).

So was this week's episode of Top Chef a "crossover" episode? Nah, I don't think so. But gladly, it was a high quality mid-season episode of Top Chef. On to Random Thoughts:
  • As a Below Deck watcher myself, I can say that if I could choose, I'd choose to work for Captain Sandy, but I'd want to hang out with Captain Lee.
  • If I was Eddie and able to pick my team, I absolutely would have chosen to have a four-person team.
  • As soon as I heard "puppy chow" and "jello shots", I knew that they'd win.
  • At what point would the power issue have led to them either cancelling the party or at least postponing an elimination. I feel like it had to have been damn close.
  • Is this the closest a cast has ever been? They all seem to genuinely like each other. They all help each other all the time and taste each other's food constantly (even in individual challenges). From a production side, I've never seen more side-by-side interviews/confessionals. Couldn't they have done buddy-buddy confessionals when we had Stefan and Fabio together?
  • It's the first Emeril appearance of the season which is always followed by me telling you all that I miss him and that they should kick Graham off and bring Emeril back full time.
  • Why did Brian wear shoes (and socks!) into the hot tub?
  • If you think that Tom has gone overboard with the Dad Jokes, don't watch Last Chance Kitchen.
  • Judges Table with the judges in the shade and the chefs baking in the sun was so funny and definitely super intentional.
  • Upon first watch, Brian's whining about his team not defending him was weird, but upon re-watch, I kind of get it, and don't think that David should have jumped the gun and said that the loss of power through most of the night was not an issue.
  • Updated scoring can be found here as always.
  • Lastly, congratulations to Kelsey who not only won her first Elimination Challenge, but also took over the #1 spot in TCFL Founding Father Rich's personal lady-Chef power rankings. TCFL vets know that Casey, the previous #1, was thought to be untouchable. In Rich's words:

"I fell in love with Kelsey. I love her personality. She's a cool fun chick. And she gets hotter as the season goes on. And she's just on point. Not like a ditzy blonde either. She's a boss.

Considering the source... no higher praise.
