TCFL 17 All-Stars // Episode 2 Recap

Greetings Top Chef fans. We are through the Draft and through Episode 2, so that means we are finally scoring the season. For the unfamiliar, I keep a scoreboard in Google Sheets tracking the progress of the Chefs and the progress of our Teams. The standings can be found HERE.

Make sure that your Team was imported properly, and feel free to point out any discrepancies or mistakes you may find both now and throughout the season. I'm always happy to check stuff out and correct, if necessary. Also, the "Name" and "Team Name" columns are directly imported from what you entered on your Draft form. If you'd like me to change either of those for you, send me an email or leave a comment below. Ridiculous Team Names are always encouraged.

Let's go straight into some Random Thoughts:

  • The episode starts off on a somber note with a tribute to Floyd Cardoz.
  • There was no Quickfire this week because the Chefs spent that time traveling to restaurants on Jonathan Gold's 101.
  • There was no way that they were going to go through a Los Angeles season without a tribute to Jonathan Gold. For some more Jonathan Gold-related content, I'd recommend The Chef Show's Jonathan Gold episode. A couple of the same restaurateurs from this Top Chef episode are featured.
  • "My main reason that I came back and the main reason that I want to win is to prove to myself that I'm not dying." -- Kevin
I'm glad that he's already on my team because I'd be rooting for him, no matter what.
  • East LA -- Melissa, Lisa, Karen
West LA -- Jen, Stephanie, Lee Anne
Downtown -- Nini, Voltaggio, Malarkey, Jamie
Hollywood -- Gregory, Kevin, Angelo, Eric
Of the four crews that traveled and ate together, I think I'd want to hang out with the Hollywood bunch the most. The West LA bunch is a close second.
  • Boy are we getting a lot of BMW X7 content, so far (it also made an appearance in this week's LCK). I'll bet my stimulus check that when they tried to voice command the names of all those restaurants into the navi system, it spit out an error message back at them.
  • All the "youngest chef"/"Baby on Board" jokes we are getting through 1.5 episodes must be a swerve. If this 2nd Elimination Challenge is any indication, Nini makes it far.
  • "What's a CD player, guys?" -- Nini, jokingly
My daughter isn't going to know what a CD player is, nor do I even have one to show her. This makes me feel super old.
  • Because I'm Filipino and I'm overly critical of these things, I checked out Lasa's menu. The menu is much more Filipino than anything they ate there on-screen.
  • Mrs. Commish's Shade of the Week (Part 1): "So is her [Melissa's] hair your inspiration for yours?"
Brutal. And for the record, no, it's not.
  • First Whole Foods shopping trip of the season!
  • Speaking of The Chef Show, I hope that wasn't the only appearance of Favreau and Choi.
  • Mrs. Commish's Shade of the Week (Part 2): Scoffing whenever Angelo pronounced "turmeric" weird.
  • When you are in an All-Stars season, rookie mistakes like not nailing Indian food when your judge/host is Padma are way more amplified.
  • When you are in an All-Stars season, veteran moves like adjusting your dish for the 2nd round of judges after the 1st round of judges criticize you are things you come to expect.
  • What a weird couple of episodes from Angelo. He is [SPOILER ALERT] also out of LCK so he leaves the seven Teams who chose him with a -4 for possibly the rest of the season.
  • Obviously we've only scored one week (and without a Quickfire), but it's nice to see a Founding Father (Mike) alone at the top of the Scoreboard. Other leaders include the foursome with the same team (I'll just be calling them "The Foursome" from here on out) and my little brother's team, Amuse-Douche, whose entry technically doesn't count because he's a deadbeat and hasn't paid me yet.
  • Alternatively, it looks like the Marr/Miritello Household needs a do-over. All three members are in the bottom five. Must be something in the water in New Jersey.
  • With that said, it's only the first week of a long season. Enjoy this week's episode!
