GBBOFL 11 // Episode 9 Recap & Finale Preview

Happy Thanksgiving / Black Friday GBBOFL! Here is our last entry before the Finale. Let's get to it:

  • Okay, this one is for the old heads, but please indulge me: The Signature for this week was Savarin cakes. The name Savarin is familiar to me and it took a sec to remember why. Savarin cakes, the molds that some of the bakers used, and a soft, cow's milk cheese are all named after Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin. Brillat-Savarin was a French lawyer and politician, but was most known for being a gastronome. But where do I know him from? His quote -- "Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are." -- opened every episode of the original Japanese Iron Chef.

  • One of my favorite things about Bake Off is that they don't emphasize time like they do on American cooking competition shows. But it feels kind of crazy that Hermine had enough time to get all the way to baking her Savarins only to start them all the way over from scratch.
  • I do not want pipettes in my food ever.
  • We have not had a Hollywood Handshake since Episode 3. Peter stopped the drought this week on the way to one hell of a week.
  • I'm absolutely trying to make a Danish Cornucopia. It can't be that hard. Only... 17 steps?!
  • Gin and Sambuca chasers sounds like the worst hangover ever.
  • Not sure why, but I get a kick out of the clip fans they give the Bakers when it is hot in the tent.
  • If I were Dave, I'd be so upset that I got the shape of the horn right but didn't stand it properly.
  • Even before Dave mentioned how much the silicone cube molds are (£9/$12), I was already thinking that you shouldn't be allowed to junk them just for the sake of the competition.
  • Laura is always in disarray. Her apron is always a mess. Her station is always a disaster. I don't think that how clean you work should earn you points in the eyes of the judges, but how dirty you work should definitely deduct some.
  • What a week for Peter. A Handshake, 1st in the Technical, and Star Baker earned him a whopping 24 (unadjusted) points for this week.
  • What a terrible week to have a terrible week. In what has to be the first legitimate upset of the season, Hermine won't be competing in the Finale. She leaves leading the league with 64 (unadjusted) points.
***
With Hermine gone, this is all Peter's to lose. Dave has been steady all season, but if Peter is at the top of his game, I don't think he has enough. I can't imagine that Laura has enough to win. Her flavors have gotten her this far. Will any sort of presentation finally come through? Who ya got?

There's still a lot left to be decided in the League. Paullywood has held the lead for three weeks in a row. Can they hold on? A strong week from Laura is what Paul Hollywood’s Firm Gray Stubble is looking for while more dominance from Peter may catapult Mary's Berry into some money. Of course there's still The Losers who may come out of nowhere with a win by Dave. Good luck to everyone and we'll see you for a Finale recap next week.
