“Why do you always gotta make it really complicated? Just let us cook food.”
Amen, Shota! Episode 5 was one where the challenge conceptualizers can't get out of their own way. Happens at least a couple times every season. Hopefully this is our one for Portland. Let's get to it:
- Mother's Day themed Quickfire gives us a chance to shout out all the Moms out there in TCFL. We have first time moms; 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time around moms; and even some grandmas. Thanks for all that you do for us, and I hope you all get some breakfast in bed, flowers, jewelry, some extra sleep, or anything else you might want this weekend.
- Continuing on the Mom theme, I'm not sure how you were supposed to take Maria's comment during the Quickfire: "Every mom tries to watch their weight." I can tell you that Mrs. Commish was not amused.
- We are approaching a dangerous point with Sara. This yogurt thing is becoming excessive... to the point that it's time to invoke the Fabio: This is Top Chef, not Top Yogurt...
- Gabriel is getting an interesting edit through five episodes. He isn't necessarily a villain (will there ever be a true villain again in Top Chef?). But it's clear that a lot of the other Chefs don't like him. We get a couple of snippets into his personality in this episode, finding out that he doesn't have a good relationship with his mom, and that he was the fat kid when he was younger.
- I had not noticed that Chris is a heavy sweater. Almost Ewing-esque. Maybe it was just hot in the Top Chef kitchen that day, OR he was sweating from bringing Padma a rose.
- Did Gabe plate ironically? I can't believe that he just threw rose petals on top of his dish.
- Amar's Pants!
- As we touched on above, this Elimination Challenge was just too convoluted. Did it have to be a team challenge? Did they have to do the film genres? Did it have to be head-to-head with a point system? The answer to all those questions is 'no'.
- Who the fuck were those guys in the other car? BJ from Charleston? Doug from Boston? I'm by no means a Top Chef historian, but I'd like to think that I'd recognize past Chefs. If they didn't put chyrons under those two guys, I'd have never put together that they were former Cheftestants. I looked them up so you wouldn't have to:
- BJ was at the bottom of the first two Elimination Challenges in Charleston before being eliminated in the third. I don't feel bad not remembering him.
- Doug finished 3rd in Boston behind Mei and Gregory, and in front of Melissa. I should feel bad not remembering... but I don't.
That makes two wing-related eliminations in a row. Will we hit a third tonight? Be sure to check out the Standings HERE. Enjoy tonight's Episode and see you next week!
