Ok, let's get it out of the way. If you were here last week, you saw my Power Rankings of the remaining Chefs going into Restaurant Wars. Who did I have as the "worst" Chef and the most likely to be eliminated next? Maria. What did she do in Restaurant Wars? Win the whole damn thing. Who did I have as the "best" Chef, and my favorite to win the whole season? Sara. What did she do in Restaurant Wars? She packed her knives and left. If any of you guys had doubts as to why I'm the guy in charge... continue to have those doubts. This isn't quite the Madden Curse (yet) but it's worth monitoring.
Thanks to everyone who came to hang out in the TCFL Chat Room during the show last week. It was a lot of fun and I'm glad we are all getting comfortable enough to shit-talk each other. As always, Standings can be found HERE.
- I think the folks at Bravo are figuring out that we're figuring out how they like to structure episodes. Everyone in the TCFL Chat Room thought Byron was either winning the Episode or going home based on his tearful family call to start the show. In the end, he didn't factor into either decision.
- Welcome to one of my all time favorites, Kristen Kish. How appropriate that she shows up for a Restaurant Wars where one of the strongest competitors on the show has to go home. Thankfully, there was no Josie equivalent this time.
- Speaking of Kristen, congrats to everyone who chose her for Tiebreaker Question #4. We'll see if it comes into play.
- If you guys are itching for more Top Chef #CONTENT, might I recommend The Watch podcast from The Ringer. One topic they delved into this week was the idea of "fusion", and how it's mostly a frowned-upon word in restaurants these days. Even the word fusion at its root is the idea of forcing two things together. Kokoson was not fusion. It was not forced. It made a lot of sense and it was no surprise that they were the winning restaurant.
- I'm not saying that she's winning me over, but Maria's food is starting to speak to me. Mrs. Commish and I love lengua, and it was actually lengua tacos that I had in the Episode 4 recap.
- Upon re-watching the episode (which I do every week so I can write for you all), it was Gabe that had all the bad ideas that ultimately doomed Penny. He's the one that came up with the "concept", or lack thereof. He also advocated for no expediter, and did the amuse tostada.
- Because of the early season edit she got, I'm always going to look at Dawn as an athlete first. Which is why her process of creating her dish was not surprising to me. It was a lot of internalization and introspection, which I imagine happens a lot for a track & field/individual event (in her case, long jump) athlete.
- Am I remembering Friends wrong, or is comparing yourself to Monica (as a chef/hostess) not actually a good thing?
- As you can probably tell by now, I was surprised that Sara went home, and honestly thought that it should have been Gabe. Reaction was mixed in the TCFL Chat Room. I do think that Sara has a chance to run the LCK table, Kish-style. What do you guys think?
- It looks like we are getting a bit of a palate cleanser tonight with a Portlandia Quickfire and some Alums cooking in the Elimination. Enjoy the show and see you all next week!
