TCFL 18 Portland // Episode 9 Recap

Hello TCFL! Short and sweet today. I'd say this was a very entertaining episode, but not necessarily a compelling one. Quick thoughts:

  • Along with a nice chunk of TCFL, both Gabe and Shota thought Sara would win too. It's always interesting hearing who the other chefs think the favorite is.
  • I've cooked on electric like on those "vintage" stoves and I can confirm that it is terrible and that Gabe is correct. It's either very "high" or super "low". I've spent the better part of the last decade cooking on gas. And now in our under construction house, we splurged on induction. If anyone has any induction tips, let me know!
  • What is with the writing on the hand thing?! I've never seen that on Top Chef before.
  • I realize that it was probably an act, but it definitely seems like Padma was ready to get Portlandia out of there ASAP.
  • I love that they were surprised that their recipes would be tested. What did they think was going to happen?
  • Hardest part of this challenge for me would be typing on an iPad. Give me a damn keyboard.
  • Melissa is the biggest dork out of all the alumni but at the same time has the most swag. She's come such a long way since her original season and it's fantastic.
  • Kwame bashing Byron's recipe and his bland nonsense was definitely *chef kiss emoji*.
  • I loved this Challenge because of how fun it was to watch, but there was no clarity to it whatsoever. Did the recipe writing matter at all? Did the Alumni version of the dish matter? At the end of everything, it seemed like they just defaulted to best/worst dish (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).
  • The most compelling part of this week came on LCK. And no, I'm not talking about Tom driving a BMW around a racetrack. It was Sara talking about wanting to get revenge on Chris because she thought he should have been eliminated instead of her. In a season that has borderline become "too nice", it was nice to see some edge.
  • Lastly, congratulations to our Midseason Bonus winner (and former Champion), Mr. Consistency. I definitely forgot that I put this in for this season (and none of you clowns reminded me).
  • Standings!
