Happy Thursday TCFL! Congrats on making it through another week. This week's Recap is gonna be short and sweet. As I mentioned last week, Mrs. Commish and I were about to have our 2nd kid. We checked in for induction this past Sunday night, and Frederick Braden Manaloto arrived at 5:31AM the following morning.
Mrs. Commish was a beast in the delivery room and is doing great and Fred has already inherited his older sister's disapproving side eye. I've heard from a bunch of you since last week and we appreciate all the well wishes.
I'd like to think that the producers at Bravo threw me a solid this/last week because while there were many consequences in Episode 6, the show as a whole was a little ho-hum. With that said, here's just a few Random Thoughts:
- Speaking of last week, did anyone catch the Episode 5 spoiler? Thanks to Ally C. for pointing it out. If you look at Malarkey's notebook, you can see that he wrote down "3rd" next to Jamie's name, "4th" next to Lisa, "5th" next to Jen, and "6th" next to both Nini and Karen. Jen, Karen, and Nini's eliminations hadn't happened to that point. Bad job, Bravo, great job Ally C.
- Malarkey, Nini, and Melissa are super into crystals. Crystals are nonsense and I'm now skeptical of Melissa winning the whole thing.
- "No AP Flour" is a weirdly apropos challenge considering you probably can't find any right now depending on where you live. It took me two weeks to find some freaking baking powder, but I did make a banger of a chocolate cake after I did (2nd pic is my daughter supervising the baking process and our dog Moochi supervising the supervising of the baking process).
- It's been enough times where I feel like we can bring back a (modified) classic Top Chef quote: "This is Top Chef, not Top Dumpling".
- Here goes Voltaggio again, choosing not to abide by the spirit of the Quickfire. This set off a 2nd -5 week in the last three episodes.
- Padma said "I'm gonna take all the flour away permanently." so convincingly that it makes me want to believe that she is actually in charge of such things. She is an Executive Producer, after all.
- Is it really that big a deal for Malarkey to buy a bag of carrots? I've had just about enough of Lee Anne at this point.
- Can we get an official pronunciation for "turmeric" and "endive", please?
- For all the Padma-haterz out there, this necklace was ridiculous. There isn't very much that she can't pull off. This was one of them.
- Lots of scoring weirdness this week. For the Elimination Challenge, only the winners --Kevin/Melissa -- earned positive points (+10). There were no "Elimination Top" (+5) points awarded this week. The two teams up for elimination (Voltaggio/Eric & Nini/Karen) each scored -3 as they normally would. The middle two teams (Lee Anne/Malarkey & Gregory/Stephanie) did not score.
- In Part 1 of LCK, both Nini and Karen earned +1 point for advancing past Lisa (-1). In Part 2, Karen earned the +10 prize for making it back into the main competition. Nini does not get an additional +1 for "advancing". In my eyes, she didn't advance. She carried over.
There's nine Chefs left (in the main competition). That means that we are just one episode away from Restaurant Wars. It looks like we will have a bit of a "filler" for Episode 7. So just in case there isn't a lot of "meat on the bone" to write about (dad joke pun intended) OR twice-over fatherhood beats me down and I can't write as much as usual, I want to try something new:
RANT AT THE COMMISH!
Need to rant about the season/a Chef/your team/a competitor/me? Want to ask me a question? Have you had an awesome/terrible experience at a Top Chef-connected restaurant? Do you have an inappropriate crush on Tom? Now's your chance. Drop me an email sometime this week and I'll post the best #CONTENT in a future Recap. Until then!
